I think what you may have done is said, "If it was an 8% increase, I'll just subtract 8% of 237.60 from 237.60 to get back to where he started." Sounds reasonable, but sadly that isn't quite right. Think about this. If I started with 100 and added 10%, I'd have 110. But if you take 10% away from 110 you get 99. So we need to find another way to solve this.
His salary was at some value that you don't know yet, so let's call that x. Now he gets an 8% increase, so 8% of his salary, or 0.08x is added to his salary, x, to get him to $237.60, thus:
Factoring the x:
Divide by 1.08:
