I have no idea how to formulate this problem. - Thanks - It's from a book
A long-distance foot race marathon covers a course of about 26.2 mi. At one point one woman was three times as far deom the end of the course as she was from the starting point. How many miles had she run at that time?
Answer by Mathtut(3670) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
lets call the total distance of the race x
:
when she is 3 times a far from the end as she is from the beginning this means she had run 1/4x and still had 3/4x to finish the race.
:
(3/4) is 3 times (1/4)
:
so to find out how far she has run so far we take 1/4 and multiply it by x(the length of the race)
:
miles and she should have 3 times that amount left to run
:
6.55*3=19.65
:
19.65+6.55=26.2..check
