Question 17446:
Answer by lainey(7) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2(x+4)=3x
You would have to apply the distributive property to this problem.
1.) 2*x= 2x
2.) 2*4= 8
3.) Since x is unknown we can not change anything involving the variable. So your solution would be 2x + 8 = 3x

The above method written by Lainey is right for the most part, though it does not arrive at the right conclusion (In other words, step 3 is wrong). We foil out everything first to get 2x+8=3x. Now we can isolate the variable.

2x+8=3x (subtract 2x from each side)
8=x

With that we know that x=8, and so you're solution would not be 2x+8=3x, but 8, as we have successfully solved for x.
