Question 161763: 27 + a = 51
1. When solving equations it is very important to remember your inverse operations (addition and subtraction) (multiplication and division)
2. You want to get the variable by itself, you start by using inverse operations
3. Now remember, in an equation whatever you include (or do) to the left of the equation, you must do to the right of the equation (to keep it equivalent, the same)
so in:
27 + a = 51 to get variable a by itself we want to get rid of 27 (or +27) by using the inverse operation (-27)
27-27+a=51-27
0+a=24
a=24
(you can check it and see that in this case substituting the variable a with 24 will make the equation work.
