65. Solve the system of equations.
:
1.5x – 7y = 2
0.625x + 3y = –2.125
:
Multiply the 1st equation by 3, and the 2nd equation by 7:
4.500x - 21y = 6
4.375x + 21y = -14.875
--------------------------addition eliminates y, find x
8.875x = -8.875
x = -1
:
Find y using the 1st equation;
1.5(-1) - 7y = 2
-1.5 - 7y = 2
-7y = 2 + 1.5
y =
y = -.5
;
check solutions in 2nd equation:
:
0.625x + 3y = –2.125
0.625(-1) + 3(-.5) = –2.125
-.625 - 1.5 = -2.125; confirms our solutions
