The object of the game is to get x by itself on one side of the equal sign.
First, get rid of the parentheses by multiplying.
3(x-2) + 2 = 2(x-4)
3x - 6 + 2 = 2x - 8
collect terms
3x - 4 = 2x - 8
Subtract 2x from both sides
x - 4 = -8
Add 4 to both sides
x = -4
that's all there is to it.
