Question 146010: Hi I am working out of a book my mom got me from a book store to help me stay on top of things during the summer. I have having a problem with this problem
8(y+5)+ 8y = 24

Answer by nerdybill(7384)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
8(y+5)+ 8y = 24
Start by distributing the 8 to terms inside the parentheses:
8y+40+ 8y = 24
combine like-terms:
16y + 40 = 24
subtract 40 from both sides:
16y = -16
divide both sides by 16
y = -1
.
To check, plug it back into the original equation:
8(y+5)+ 8y = 24
8(-1+5)+ 8(-1) = 24
8(4)+ 8(-1) = 24
32 - 8 = 24
24 = 24 (checks)

Answer by ptaylor(2198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
8(y+5)+ 8y = 24

First, we'll use the distributive law to get rid of parens:
8y+40+8y=24 Now, we'll subtract 40 from each side ---to get the y's on one side and the numbers on the other
8y+40-40+8y=24-40 Collect like terms
16y=-16 divide each side by 16
y=-1-------------------------------------ans
CK
8(-1+5)+8*(-1)=24
32-8=24
24=24
Hope this helps---ptaylor
