When 2 is subtracted from the numerator and 1 is added to the denominator of a positive fraction the result is 5. Find the fraction given that it lies between 7 and 8
:
n = numerator, d = denominator
:
= 5
:
n - 2 = 5(d+1)
n - 2 = 5d + 5 + 2
n = 5d + 7
:
Substitute values for d, find an integer which satisfies the "between 7 & 8" requirement
:
d=2
n = 5(2) + 7
n = 17
= 8.5 obviously not the solution
:
d=3
n = 5(3) + 7
n = 22
= 7.333, this is fraction we are seeking
