x = 21/20 = 1 1/20

Multiply thru by 8 to get:
10x + x = 9
11x = 9
x = 9/11

eliminate both minus signs, just to make it easier to read.

Then, "cross multiply" That's a short way to eliminate the fractions. Multiply one NUM by the other DEN, and set them equal.
5 times 8 = 6x times 7
40 = 42x
x = 40/42 = 20/21
That's all.
