Question 142977: I have a story problem and I don't know how to answer it. The problem is: Mr.Glock's car broke down on the turnpike. Acme Towing charged $30 plus $3 per mile to tow the car. If Mr.Glock paid $117, how far was the car towed?
I have to set up and equation and then solve it. Can you help me?

Let x = the number of miles Mr Glock's was towed.
The towing charges can be written as:
$30 + $3(x) = $117 This is the equation! To solve for x, subtract $30 from both sides.
$3(x) = $87 Now divide both sides by $3.
$3(x)/$3 = $87/$3
x = 29
Mr Glock's car was towed 29 miles.
