h=hardback books
p+h=8
4p+8h=44
Take the first equation and put it into a p= or h= equation
p=8-h
4(8-h)+8h=44
32-4h+8h=44
32+4h=44

p+3=8
p=5
She bought 3 hardback books and 5 paperback books
