this is done just like long division

4x goes into 8x^3, 2x^2 times __ 2x^2 times 2 is 4x^2 __ -20x^2 minus 4x^2 is -24x^2

4x goes into -24x^2, -6x times __ -6x times 2 is -12x __ -48x minus -12x is -36x

4x goes into -36x, -9 times __ -9 times 2 is -18 __ -18 minus -18 is zero (no remainder)

(8x^3-20x^2-48x-18)/(4x+2)=2x^2-6x-9
