Question 123297: May I have some help with the following problem?
Suppose that each point in the coordinate plane is shifted 4 units to the right and 3 units upward.
(a) What point is shifted to (1, 3)?
(b) The point (a, b) is shifted to what new point?

If every point is shifted 4 to the right, every x-coordinate would be 4 units larger. If every point is shifted 3 units up, every y-coordinate would be 3 units larger.

So the point that is now at (1,3) was a point that was 4 units smaller in the x-coordinate, and 3 units smaller in the y-coordinate.

1 - 4 = -3 and 3 - 3 = 0, so the original point was (-3,0)

The point that started at (a, b) would now be at (a+4, b+3)
