                      FUEL EFF.    VOLUME        DISTNANCES

firstcar               35            v           35v

secondcar              25           65-v         25(65-v)

all                                  65            1975

You can figure out what this means and what to do.

A family has two cars. The first car has a fuel efficiency of 35 miles per gallon of gas
and the second has a fuel efficiency of 25 miles per gallon of gas.
During one particular week, the two cars went a combined total of 1975 miles,
for a total gas consumption of 65 gallons.
How many gallons were consumed by each of the two cars that week?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let x = # gallons consumed by one car.
Then the number of gallons consumed by the other car is (65-x).
The combined traveled distance  equation is
    35*x + 25*(65-x) = 1975   miles.
From this equation,  x =  = 35.
ANSWER.  First car consumed 35 gallons.  The second car consumed the rest  65 - 35 = 30 gallons.
CHECK.   35*35 + 25*30 = 1975  miles, the combined distance.   ! Correct !
