the length of the board is 14 feet.
let x = the size of the smaller piece.
then 2x + 2 = the size of the larger piece.
your equation is x + 2x + 2 = 14
combine like terms and subtract 2 from both sides of the equation to get:
3x = 12
solve for x to get x = 4
that's the size of the smaller piece.
the larger piece is 2 times that plus 2 = 10
the sum of the two pieces is 14.
