A 170-meter-long sidewalk from the mathematics building M to the student center C is shown in red in the illustration. However, students prefer to walk directly from M to C. How long are the two segments of the existing sidewalk?
----------
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
a + b = 170
c = 130
============
a = 170 - b
(170- b)^2 + b^2 = 130^2
Solve for b
etc.
