The equation for the area to find x is THIS


    4x*x = 100  square inches

    4x^2 = 100

     x^2 = 100/4 = 25

     x           = sqrt%2825%29 = 5 inches.


ANSWER.  The width is 5 inches.  The length is 4*5 = 20 inches.
