     a)  For you info: this statement is an INEQUALITY, not an equation.

     b)  There are INFINITELY many solutions to this inequality, so it is IMPOSSIBLE to find "the" number.



From your post, it is clearly seen that you do not understand NEITHER Math, NOR English.

write an INEQUALITY and solve each word problem: 
1. Ten less than a number is at most six. Find the number.

To express "ten less than a number", think of starting with x and subtracting
10.  So to express "ten less than a number" is to write x-10.

To express "is at most six", think of "equal 6 or less than 6" or <.

Inequality:             x-10 <  6 
Add 10 to both sides:    +10  +10
----------------------------------------
                        x    < 16

2. Penny made a 74% on her first test. What must she get on her next test to have an average of at least 80% (100 points per test)?
AVERAGE = (FIRST TEST + SECOND TEST)รท2 > 80%
                           (74% + X)/2 > 80%
Multiply thru by 2:            74% + X > 160%
Subtract 74% from both sides  -74%       -74%
---------------------------------------------------
                                     X >  86%
