Answer. 40 + (40+60) = 140. There are 140 students in the class.

Solution.

According to the condition, each student belongs to one of the two subsets:

    a) EITHER 40 students who play both cricket and football,

    b) OR (40+60) students who play only one sport.

These two subsets have empty intersection and cover the entire population of the class, which gives the answer.
