Question 1096437: how can i do a mixed number
Answer by addingup(3677)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the bottom number, called the denominator, tells you how many total parts you have, say 8 slices of pizza (or cake, if you prefer cake).
The top number, called the numerator, tells you how many slices are gone (you ate them, or maybe your friends, or someone took them. They are gone).
Thus, if you see that there is 1/2 pizza left... well, the total pizza would be 2 and there's one missing. But there is a catch here!. Fractions are simplified.
So, what you are calling 1/2 pizza may have 4 slices left. So the pizza had 8 slices, 8/8, 4 were eaten and you have 4/8 slices. Since both numbers are divisible by 2, you divide and get 1/2. Get it?

Mixed number:
You had a party. You bought several pizzas. Each pizza was divided into 8 slices. At the end of the evening you have two boxes left, one has not been touched and therefore has 8 slices in it. The other has 2 slices left. This means that in total you have 10/8 slices, meaning 1 whole pizza (8/8) plus 2 slices, or 1 2/8 simplify and you get that you have 1 1/4 pizza.
