.
-2*(7-y) + 4 = -4   ====>

-2*7 + 2y + 4 = -4  ====>  subtract4 from both sides  ====>

-14 + 2y = -8   ====>  add 14 to both sides

2y = -8 + 14

2y = 6  ====>  y =  = 3.

Answer.  y = 3.

You may check this solution on your own by substituting the value y= 3 into the original equation.

I personally would not use the distributive law to simplify the expression on the left, as the other tutors who answered your question have done.

(1) Move the "4" on the left to the right side, to get the term containing the variable by itself:

(2) Divide both sides by -2:

From there the answer y=3 is easy to see, or to find using formal algebra.
