If xy=56, and y-x=1, what are the values of x and y?

Use the substitution method to solve for x and y. You must solve for one variable in one of the equations and substitute into the other equation. I recommend you solve for y in the second equation, and substitute into the other one.

xy = 56
y-x =1, so y = x+1

xy = 56
x(____) = 56
x(x+1) = 56

Factor it:
(x+8)(x-7) = 0
x= -8; x= 7

Substitute these values back into the simplest equation (take your pick!):
If x = -8, then y = x+1 =-8 + 1 = -7.
If x = 7, then y = x+1=7+1= 8

There are two points of solution:
(-8,-7) and (7,8)
