The word problem reads:
After dieting and exercising for several months, Jared now weighs 20% less than he did originally. If Jared now weighs 180 pounds, how much did he weigh originally?
I know I make:
X = Original weight
(x-.20x)= Amt. of loss the 20%
180 lbs = Current weight
Do I set up the equation as:
x-(x-.20x) = 180
x-x-.20x = 180
+.20 +.20
________ ______
?x = 180.20

"Is the problem set up correctly? Do I count 3x?; or Do I count 2x? "Please" explain in a very simple explanation, so that I understand."

your work looks OK except that you have miscalculated the weight loss

x is his original weight and he lost 20% or .20x ... you've got an extra x in your setup

(weight now)=(original weight)-(loss) ... 180=x-.20x ... 180=.80x
