How do I solve 7y/8 - 3y/5 = 11/2?

Multiply both sides by 40, which is common denominator of fractions.
You will get

7*5*y - 3*8*y = 11*20, or

35y - 24y = 220, or

11y = 220.

Hence, y = = 20.
