In Ajax Corporation, the first shift produced 4 1/2 times as many lightbulbs as the second shift. If the number of lightbulbs was 55,000 how many lightbulbs were produced on each shift?
-----------
Let # produced by 2nd shift be "x".
Then # produced by 1st shift = 4.5 x
-------------
EQUATION:
x + 4.5x = 55000
5.5x = 55000
x = 10,000 (# produced by 2nd shift)
4.5x = 45000 (# produced by 1st shift)
