Maybe your textbook will have other examples? If not, maybe other textbooks of the same kind at the same level or above?

You could try to completely generalize the particular example problem you have.

Note, this might not have integers solutions for all possible given values:
One number is k less than p times another number. If their sum is decreased by m, the result is r. Find the numbers.

Transcribe the description EXACTLY.
You want two number, which might or might not be integers. Let them be x and y.

That is the system of equations according to the description, literally. TWO numbers are unknowns to be solve for. They are x and y. The other variables, are assumed to be constants, at least for purposes of the example exercise which this generalized description came from.

Do you see what can be done to solve for x and y? What if you just pick some values for k, p, m, and r, and then try to solve for x and y?

You should be able to find values for BOTH numbers in your given example. I came up with 4 for the first number and 13 for the second number -- You need to have values for THE TWO NUMBERS. ( I did the work without the generalization, instead using the numbers as given from the start.)
