Question 943832: What number can be inserted in the blank space so that 59_172 is divisible by 6
Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the first 2 digits can't change.
59/6 = 9 with a remainder of 5.
the problem reduces to 6 dividing evenly into 5_172
the number can't be 4 because then 6 would divide evenly into 54 and 6 doesn't divide evenly into 172.
since the number has to be the remainder of a division of 6 into 5_, then the number can't be greater than 5.
that leave 1,2,3 and 5 as the possible numbers.
it remains to test each one to see which one will allow the division to complete evenly.
6 doesn't divide evenly into 51172
nor 52172
yes 53172
the number has to be 3
your number becomes 593172
divide that by 6 and you get 98862
the missing number has to be 3.
