Question 870812: A girl wants to buy matching shirts for each participant of an event. The total bill for shirts was $1807.81 and she was not charged tax. She was surprised that shirts had gone up from last year when they were only $5. If she bought just enough shirts so that each participant received one pair, how many came to the event and how much was the cost of each shirt?
Answer by JulietG(1812)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
We know that the cost of the shirts is more than $5. We know that the total cost was $1807.81, and that each person received two shirts (a pair).
.
What are the divisors of 180781? 293 and 617.
There is no way for each person to receive a pair of shirts, yet have the total come up to an odd number.
If they didn't get a pair, then one possibility is that there were 293 shirts made at a cost of $6.17 each.
