i am guessing the problem looks like this:

so, multiply through by 2
7x+x=6x+3+5x
8x=11x+3
subtract 3 from both sides:
8x-3=11x
subtract 8x from both sides:
-3=3x
divide both sides by 3:
-1=x
so x=-1
