let the number be x
seven times the number is 7x
seven times the number decreased by 2 is 7x-2
seven times the number decreased by 2 is 19 is 7x-2=19
7x-2=19
Add 2 to each side of the equation
7x-2+2=19+2
7x=21
Divide each side of the equation by 7 to get
x=21/7
x=3
