seven times a number is 7x
decreased by two means minus 2
is 19 means =19
So...
7x-2=19
solve for x by getting 7x alone
you do this by adding 2 to both sides
7x-2+2=19+2
as you see on the left -2+2 cancels out and you are left with 7x
7x=19+2
7x=21
divide both sides by 7
7x/7=x
21/7=3
x=3
