Impossible to tell. You didn't define what you mean by "sharing."

For example, perhaps they gave each friend one apple, that would leave 737 apples between them.

Perhaps they gave 542 of their friends one apple each, 731 of their friends 2 apples each, and kept 2 apples each for a total of 6 between them.

Perhaps they cut 67 apples into 19 equal pieces and gave each of their 1273 friends one nineteenth of an apple each, retaining 1943 apples between them.

All of the above is predicated on the assumption that the story is telling about a total of 1276 people, the 1273 friends plus Bob, Martha, and George. Another interpretation of the statement: "The sum of the number of friends sharing the apples is 1273." is that there are 1270 people plus Bob, Martha, and George making a sum of 1273 overall.

In that case:

Perhaps they gave each friend one apple, that would leave 740 apples between them.

Perhaps they gave 530 of their friends one apple each, 734 of their friends 2 apples each, and kept 2 apples each for a total of 6 between them.

Perhaps they cut 254 apples into 5 equal pieces and gave each of their 1270 friends one fifth of an apple each, retaining 1756 apples between them.

Capisce?
