Question 159041: Please help me divide a whole number into a decimal. 500/0.005
Answer by gonzo(654)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the problem as shown is 500 divided by .005
in equation form this looks like
if you wish to remove the decimal from the denominator, you can multiply both numerator and denominator by 1000 which will keep the same ratio but the denominator will now be a whole number
becomes
the answer is
multiplying by 1000 is equivalent to moving the decimal 3 places over because 1000 is 1 * 10^3 power.
you just have to remember that if you move the decimal point over by 3 places to the right in the denominator, you have to do the same with the numerator.
not sure what grade you're in, but assuming you're not familiar with it, moving the decimal point to the right 1 place is the same as multiplying the number by 10.
moving decimal point to the right 2 places is the same as multiplying the number by 100,
3 to the right same as multiplying by 1000
4 to the right same as multiplying by 10000
etc.
if you're dividing by hand, you always try to make the denominator (otherwise known as the divisor) an integer (no decimal places in the denominator).
if you're using a calculator, you just enter 500 and divided it by .005 and the calculator does all the work for you. you can use the calculator to check your work. if you get the same answer then you probably did it correctly.
