Question 399996: QUESTION: Does this make sense or does it not make sense?
Angles A and B are supplementary, so I modeled this condition using:
4x-2y+4=12x + 6y+12+180
Angle A: 4x-2y+4 Angle B: 12x+6y+12
>>>>ATTEMPTED SOLOUTION:
I attempted this problem knowing that supplementary angles add up to 180 degrees
This is my set up:
12x+6y+12
4x-2y+4 I divided the top equation by 6 and the bottom equation by 2 to bring it down to smaller
numbers. Resulting in the following equations
2x+y+2
2x-y+2
The "Y's" disappear leaving the equation 4x+4=180.....subtract 4 from both side of the equations 4x+176
divide by 4 on each side to isolate the variable which results in x=44
to check if the answer is correct I back substitute 44 for x in the reduced equation which resulted in
2*44 + y +2 which becomes 88 + y + 2 = 90 + y combine like terms by - y from right side equation and left side equation......move the combine 88 and 2 to = 90 resulting in 90 = 90.......which is true
since both of these equations add to 180.....I would say that this problem MAKES SENSE but the answer in the back of the book says it DOES NOT make sense............why doesn't it?
