Question 48235: A rectangular garden is to be surreounded by a walkway of constant width. The garden's dimensions are 30ft by 40ft. The total area, graden plus walkway, is to be 1800 sq ft. What must be the width of the walkway to the nearest thousandth?
I know that the garden area is 1200 sq ft and that the total area is 1800 sq ft, but how do I get the width of the walkway? The difference is 600 sq ft. Is there a specific formula I can use to get the answer? I am using Beginning Algebra 6th edition, Hutchinson, Bergman, Hoezle, Baratto. This specific question is not in the book, it's an additional exercise the instructor has given me.
