Question 181896: Write the following numbers in scientific notation:
Number in standard notation Number in scientific notation
1,990,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
48,500

0.005
0.00012
0.00000000000000000000000000000091093897
Insight: The following are simplified procedures for writing a number in scientific notation and reverse:
To Write a Number in Scientific Notation
1. Move the decimal point in the original number to the right or left until you obtain a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10.
2. Count the number of places you have moved the decimal point to obtain the number in step 1. If the decimal point was moved to the left, the count is to be considered positive. If the decimal point was moved to the right, the count is to be considered negative.
3. Multiply the number obtained in step 1 by 10 raised to the count found in step 2. (Note that the count determined in step 2 is the exponent on the base 10.)
Examples:
- Males have up to 5,800,000 red blood cells per cubic millimeter of blood, or
5,800,000 =
- The probability of winning a lottery may be 0.0000018, or
0.0000018 =
To Convert a Number given in Scientific Notation to Decimal Notation
1. Observe the exponent on the 10
2. a) If the exponent is positive, move the decimal point in the number to the right the same number of places as the exponent. Adding zeros to the number might be necessary.
b) If the exponent is negative, move the decimal point in the number to the left the same number of places as the exponent. Adding zeros might be necessary.
Examples:
- The age of the earth is estimated to be years = 4,600,000,000 years
- The average grain size in siltstone is = 0.00135

Question 181893: The Great Galaxy in Andromeda (also known as the Andromeda Galaxy or M31) is about 2.5 million light years from Earth. When we look at this galaxy today, we see light that has been traveling through space for 2.5 million years; i.e. when we look at the Andromeda Galaxy, we are seeing it as it was about 2.5 million years ago! Think about this, we are looking back in time.
1 light year is the distance that light travels in 1 year. Speed of light is 300,000 kilometers/second, find the distance that light travels from the Andromeda Galaxy to Earth in kilometers and express it in scientific notation.

115. Kepler’s third law. According to Kepler’s third law of
planetary motion, the ratio t^2/r^3
has the same value for every
planet in our solar system. R is the average radius of the
orbit of the planet measured in astronomical units (AU),
and T is the number of years it takes for one complete
orbit of the sun. Jupiter orbits the sun in 11.86 years with
an average radius of 5.2 AU, whereas Saturn orbits the
sun in 29.46 years. Find the average radius of the orbit
of Saturn. (One AU is the distance from the earth to
the sun.)
116. Orbit of Venus. If the average radius of the orbit of Venus
is 0.723 AU, then how many years does it take for Venus
to complete one orbit of the sun? Use the information in question115

Question 182696This question is from textbook Teaching Textbooks
: I've been working on profit equations and am starting to understand, but this one added something new and I don't know how to deal with it.
Question - Rose invested some of her $15,000 in bonds that made a 6% profit and the rest in bonds that made a 10% profit. If the profit on the 10% bonds was $1,000 more than the profit on the 6% bonds, how much did she invest in the 6% bonds?
I think that if x= amount invested on the 6% bonds then
.06x = .10(15,000 -x), but I don't know where to put the extra $1000 profit? Does it even belong in the equation?
I tried .06x = .10+1,000(15,000-x), but that is a mess. Thanks for your help! This question is from textbook Teaching Textbooks

I'm really struggling to find the algebraic formula. I've tried spreading the staff across both products and calculating the man hours available and required etc but I just seem to go in circles.
I know I need 3 Lines on my graph so 3 constraints are required as otherwise the feasible domain wont be found but I'm still going in circles.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
