Hi there,
x = printer cartridges
y = copier cartridges
5x + 2y = 40........(1)
6x + 3y = 57........(2)
Multiply Equation 1 by 3
Multiply Equation 2 by 2
15x + 6y = 120 .......(1)
12x + 6y = 114 .......(2)
Subtract (2) from (1)
3x = 6
x = 2
Substitute x = 2 into Equation (1)
5x + 2y = 40
5(2) + 2y = 40
10 + 2y = 40
2y = 30
y = 15
Bank will be paid:
$2 for an empty printer cartridge
$15 for an empty copier cartridge
Hope this helps :-)
