Question 995633: A notebook and a pencil cost $40.50.if the notebook cost $30 more than the pencil,what is the cost of each?
Answer by addingup(3677)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
n+p= 40.5 (equation 1)
n= p+30 substitute this value for n in equation 1
p+30+p= 40.5 subtract 30 from both sides and add p
2p= 10.5 divide both sides by 2
p= 5.25 is the cost of the pencil
proof:
5.25+30= 35.25 is the cost of the notebook, and:
35.25+5.25= 40.50 in the cost of the notebook and the pencil, just like the problem says
