Question 994994: A family has a coin jar that is now full. The children count the change and calculate the total value to be $31.97. Let Q represent the number of quarters and use the information below to find the number of each coin.
There are:
143 more dimes than quarters
2 times as many nickels as quarters
17 more than 25 times as many pennies as quarters

Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let quarters=x
dimes are x+143
nickels are 2x
pennies are 25x +17.
.25x+ (.10)(x+143)+(.05)(2x)+(.01)(25x +17)=31.97
.25x+.10x+14.3+.10x+.25x+0.17=31.97
0.7x+14.47=31.97, collecting terms
0.7x=17.50
x=25 quarters (6.25)
x+25=168 dimes (16.80)
2x=50 nickels (2.50)
25x+17=642 pennies (6.42)
These add up to $31.97
