In 2008, U.S. companies spent a total of
$118.2 billion on newspaper, television, and magazine
ads.

and magazine ads together.
The amount spent on magazine ads was $3.5 billion
more than the amount spent on newspaper ads.
--------
Equations:
n + t + m = 118.2
t = n + m + 10.8
m = n + 3.5
------
Note:: t = n + n+3.5 + 10.8 = 2n + 14.3
----
Substitute for t and m and solve for "n"::
n + 2n+14.3 + n + 3.5 = 118.2
-----
4n + 17.8 = 118.2
4n = 100.4
How much was spent on each form
of advertising?
-----
n = 25.1B (amt spent on newspaper ads)
Solve for t = 2n+14.3
Solve for m = n+3.5
