Question 985428: Four sisters contributed equally to buy a present for their father they receive a ten percent discount on the original price of the gifts after the discount was taking each sister paid $13.50 what was the original price of the gift

" each sister paid $13.50 " so the total price paid is 13.5*4 = 54 dollars

This is the price AFTER the discount

Let x be the price before the discount

-------------------------------------------------------

Price after discount = (price before discount) - (10% of price before discount)

54 = (x) - (10% of x)

54 = x - 0.10x

54 = 0.90x

0.90x = 54

0.90x/0.90 = 54/0.90 Divide both sides by 0.90 to isolate x.

x = 60

So the price before the discount was $60.
