Question 976078: At a football game, a vender sold a combined total of 188 sodas and hot dog. The number of sodas sold was 50 more than the number of hot dogs sold. Find the number of sodas sold and the number of hot dogs sold.
Answer by FrankM(1040) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This can be reduced to a single variable equation:
X=Sodas
X+50 = Hotdogs
X+X+50 = total sales = 188
2X+50 = 188
2X = 138
X= 69 (soda)
X+50 = 119 (hot dogs)
Keep in mind, this has the feel of 2 equations and 2 unknowns, but that approach is a time waster. The above method works, is correct, and far faster. Recognize when to use it vs when you really need the alternate method.
