Let the number of student's tickets be x
Then the number of gen. adm. tickets, using
ONE PART = TOTAL MINUS OTHER PART,
is 350-x.

gen. adm.  350-x        $5      $5(350-x)

 The equation comes from the column on the right

  

        3x + 5(350-x) = 1450

       3x + 1750 - 5x = 1450

           -2x + 1750 = 1450

                  -2x = -300

                    x = 150 = the number of student's tickets.

The number of gen. adm. tickets is 350-x or 350-150 or 200 gen. adm.s.

Checking:  150 student's is $450 and 200 gen. adm.s is $1000

            And indeed $450 + $1000 = $1450
