Let the number of Whites be x
Then the number of Yellows, using
ONE PART = TOTAL MINUS OTHER PART,
is 22-x.
                      Money Money
Type Number from from
 of of EACH ALL
shirts shirts shirt shirts
-------------------------------------------
Whites x $9.95 $9.95x
Yellows 22-x $13.50 $13.50(22-x)
-------------------------------------------
TOTALS 22 ----- $272.15

The equation comes from the column on the right

  9.95x + 13.50(22-x) = 272.15

Get rid of decimals by multiplying every term by 100:

   995x + 1350(22-x) = 27215

995x + 29700 - 1350x = 27215

       -356x + 29700 = 27215

               -355x = -2485

                   x = 7 = the number of Whites.

The number of Yellows is 22-x or 22-7 or 15 Yellows.

Checking: 7 Whites is $69.65 and 15 Yellows is $202.50

            And indeed $69.65 + $202.50 = $272.15
