x + y = 185
10x + 15y = 2450
solve first equation for x and substitute for x in the second equation
10(185-y) +15y = 2450
1850 -10y +15y = 2450
5y = 600
y = 120
x = 65
therefore,
the rate for the first mechanic is $65/hour and the rate for the second mechanic is $120/hour
