.
F=first number=S-5; S=second number
5F=2S+8 Substitute for F.
5(S-5)=2S+8
5S-25=2S+8 Add 25 to each side.
5S=2S+33 Subtract 2s from each side.
3S=33 Divide each side by 3
S=11 ANSWER 1: The second number is 11.
F=S-5=11-5=6 ANSWER 2: The first number is 6.
CHECK:
5F=2S+8
5(6)=2(11)+8
30=30

Let the second number be x.
Then the first number is x-5.
Five times the first is eight more than two times the second.
5(x-5)=8+2x
5x-25=8+2x
3x=25+8
3x=33
x=11
The second number is 11.
The first number is 6.
