x and y are the two numbers.
x-y=3
x=y+3
x+y=13 Substitute for x
(y+3)+y=13 Subtract 3 from each side.
2y=10 Divide each side by 2
y=5 ANSWER 1 One of the numbers is 5.
x=y+3=5+3=8 ANSWER 2: The other number is 8
CHECK:
x+y=13
8+5=13
13=13
x-y=3
8-5=3
3=3
