The pressure 100 feet beneath the ocean surface is approximately 4 atm where as at a depth of 200 feet the pressure is about 7 atm
:
A. Find a linear function that expresses pressure as a function of depth
Find the slope (m) with x/y pairs:
x1 = 100 y1 = 4
x2 = 200 y2 = 7
m = = = .03 is the slope
At 0 depth, there will be 1 atm, therefore y = 1 when x=0:
f(x) = .03x + 1
:
B. use the function of part (a) to determine the pressure at a depth of 690 ft.
f(x) = .03(690) + 1
f(x) ~ 22 atm at 690 ft
