Write an equation for exactly what it says
:
a number,y, is equal to the sum of another number,x and four.
y = x + 4
that same number,y,is also three times the other number,x.
y = 3x
find the value of y
:
First find x; replace y with 3x in the first equation
3x = x + 4
3x - x = 4
2x = 4
x = 2
now find y
y = 2 + 4
y = 6
