What is the cost for each item?
let b = cost of burgers
let f = cost of fries

Write an equation for each transaction
4b + 3f = 26.50
and
5b + 5f = 36.25
simplify, divide by 5 and you have
b + f = 7.25
f = (7.25-b)

Substitute (7.25-b) for f in the 1st equation
4b + 3(7.25-b) = 26.50
4b + 21.75 - 3b = 26.50
4b - 3b = 26.50 - 21.75
b = $4.75 for a burger
and
f = 7.25-4.75
